More than 2500 years old ancient city, situated on the banks of the river Vaigai. Madurai is believed to have b Loeen built by the Pandyan King Kulasekara. Legend has it that drops of Maduram (nectar) fell fromrd Shiva's locks when he came to bless its people for constructing a temple for him. Madurai's history can be divided into four periods, beginning over 2000 years ago, when it was the capital of the Pandyan Kings. Apart from a brief period it fell to the Cholas, ­Madurai remain with Pandyan till the decline of the empire. The 200 year old reign of the Nayakas marked the golden era when art, architecture and learning scaled new heights.
The Pandiyan rulers made Madurai their capital and ruled from here for 4 centuries till the 10 th century AD when the Cholas took over briefly before handing it back to the Pandiyans who late lost it to the invading Muslims led by Malik Kaufer.In the 14 th century the Hindu Vijayanagar kings of Hampi captured Madurai.In the 16 th century, the Nayaks took over and it was during the glorious reign of Tirumalai Nayak (1623-1655) that Madurai become the cultural









centre of the Tamils, playing a pivotal role in the development of the Tamil language.
The Meenakshi Temple in the heart of the old town is the supreme attraction here. A rightfully flamboyant example of Dravidian architecture it has gopurams covered from top to bottom with vibrant images of deities, animals and mythical figures. Its magnetism lures pilgrims and tourists here in hundred of thousands, and it is estimated that on an average not less than 10,000 visit here every day. Today Madurai is a lively bustling city and an important commercial hub of Tamil Nadu popular with travels too.

SriMeenakshiTemple

City's main attraction is the 2000 years old famous Meenakshi temple in the heart of the old town - a splendid example of Dravidian architecture. The present temple was designed in ­1560 by Vishwanatha Nayak and subsequently built during the reign of Tirumalai Nayak. There are four entrances to the temple with an area of six hectares. Each of its 12 towers has the height of 45 to 50 meter. The Potrama Raikulam or the Golden Lotus Tank is the place where the Tamil literacy society, called Sangam used to meet to decide the merits of the work presented to them. The manuscripts that sank were dismissed while those that floated were considered great. The temple museum has 985 richly carved pillars and each one surpasses the other in beauty.

Tirumalai Nayak Mahal
This Indo - Saracenic building was constructed in 1523 and was originally four times as large as today. Sound and light show on the life of the Tirumalai Nayak and the story of the Silapathikaram are conduced daily.

GandhiMuseum
The 300-year-old palace now converted into ­Museum has a picture gallery, a library of personal memorable of the Mahatma Gandhi and an exhibit of South Indian handicrafts and village industries.

Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam
This enormous temple tank is fed by water from the Vaigai River. The tank has a mandapam at the centre enshrining Lord Vigneshwara.A colorful float festival is held in this tank every year on Thaipoosam day (Jan – Feb).

Alagarkoil
Situated 26 kms away from Madurai is this 12 th century AD temple dedicated to and avatar of Lord Vishnu – Alagar.Set within forest hills and a ruined fort,there are ceiling paintings here dating back to the 18 th century depicting the stories from Ramayana.

How To Reach

Air: The airport is situated 12 Kms from the city centre. The Indian Airlines office on West Veli Street has flights connecting Trichi to Chennai, Kozhikode & Mumbai.
Rail: Madurai railway station is on West Veli Street and the main cities it connects Madurai directly with are Coimbatore, Chennai, Rameswaram, Tirupathi and Kollam.
Road: Connected by a good network of roads, Madurai has five bus stands and an efficient bus service and advance ticket booking is computerized. Apart from buses run by the State Transport Corporation, there are several private super deluxe buses connecting Madurai to Chennai and Bangalore.
